Shopping online for tailored dress shirts can feel uncertain when you are aiming for the right fit. Our sizing tool is designed to create accurate measurements for most customers ordering custom-made dress shirts. It is built using data from a large number of made-to-measure shirts and refined over time.

If you prefer to double check before ordering a custom-made shirt, measuring a dress shirt you already own and like the fit of is one of the most reliable methods. This shirt measuring guide shows how to measure a shirt properly at home, step by step, to help ensure a consistent and comfortable fit.

Measuring collar

When measuring the collar, start by unbuttoning the shirt and lay it flat down on its back. Start measuring from the outer edge of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

Measuring chest

The chest measurement is taken across the shirt at the bottom of the sleeve seams. Note that this is not a circumference measurement.

Measuring waist

The waist measurement is taken across the shirt at the narrowest part of the waist. Note that this is not a circumference measurement.

Measuring bottom

The bottom width measurement is taken across the shirt at the end of the side seams. Please note that this is not a circumference measurement.

Measuring shirt length

The shirt length measurement is taken from a point straight out from the center of the neck opening down to where your shirt ends.

Measuring shoulder width

The shoulder width measurement is taken at the top of the shirt from one sleeve seam to the other.

Measuring long sleeve - upper length

The upper length measurement is taken from the top of the shoulder where the sleeve meets the body to the end of the cuff.

Measuring cuffs

The cuff measurement is taken across the open cuff, from the outer edge of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

Measuring armhole depth

The armhole measurement is taken across the sleeve where it meets the shirt body. Don’t forget to straighten the seam when taking this measurement.

A Few Tips Before You Finish

This guide uses flat width measurements only, and keeping that in mind will help you avoid the most common measuring mistakes.

Taking your time, smoothing the seams, and following this guide accurately will give you numbers you can trust. If you follow the steps, you will end up with accurate measurements that make ordering custom dress shirts online a lot easier and more reassuring.
