A high-quality suit is an investment that's well worth the money if you take care of your suit properly. Although most suits are made to be used often and to withstand wear and tear, you can significantly extend the life of your suit by following our advice.
2. Alternate your suits. It's always good to have at least five good suit options that you can rotate during the week. The same goes for shoes and shirts. By rotating them, you'll have less wear and tear on your suits and also get a more varied and interesting wardrobe.
3. Avoid using the pockets too much. The inside pockets of a suit are not designed to carry heavy items. Filling the jacket’s inner pockets with items such as car keys or a wallet can stretch the fabric over time and affect how the jacket hangs. It can also make the jacket look uneven. Filling the outer pockets can have the same effect, making the suit look bulky and spoiling its tailored silhouette.
4. Don't wash it too often. As always, it's very important to read the label before washing your suit. Most suits should be dry-cleaned, but first, check the washing symbols to make sure. Dry-clean it as rarely as possible. About once every six months should be enough unless there's a stain that needs to be removed immediately. The strong chemicals used in dry cleaning put a lot of wear on the fabric and will shorten the life of your suit.
5. Buy a good clothes brush. Investing in a proper clothes brush is a good idea. It helps you remove marks and surface dirt from the suit and keep it looking clean and fresh. A lint roller is also useful for keeping lint and dust off your suit.
6. Take care of it and hang it properly. Suits should be hung on sturdy wooden suit hangers, with enough space for the fabric to breathe after a day’s wear. If possible, avoid squeezing your suit in tightly among other clothes in the wardrobe. Always hang it up after wearing it, even after a late night. Letting it hang overnight is well worth it.
7. Use a steam iron. To help your suit stay smooth and wrinkle-free, steam it regularly with a steam iron. This helps relax the fibres and refresh the fabric. Avoid using a regular iron directly on the fabric, as it can damage the surface and cause unwanted shine. A steam iron is a worthwhile investment if you want your suit to keep its appearance over time. If you do need to use a regular iron, always place a protective cloth between the garment and the iron, such as a clean pillowcase or tea towel.
8. When travelling. It is important to take care of your suit when you travel. Make sure you have a suit carrier or a good-quality garment bag that is not too heavy. Ideally, it should be made from a breathable material so your suit can air properly while you travel.
