What are chinos?
Chinos are trousers for men made from durable cotton twill, designed to sit between casual denim and more formal dress pants. Custom-tailored chinos follow the same construction, defined by a clean silhouette and typically two to four pockets depending on your chosen design.
The smooth twill fabric gives chinos a refined appearance while remaining suitable for everyday wear. Their versatility lies in their simplicity, working across a wide range of colours and fabrics and pairing easily with shirts, knitwear, or jackets.
What materials are chinos made from?
Chinos were originally developed as military trousers and gained wider use in the late 19th and early 20th century. The name “chino” comes from the Spanish word for “China”, referring to the cotton twill fabric historically sourced there.
Traditionally, chinos are made from tightly woven cotton twill. The fabric is known for its durability, smooth surface, and structured drape, making it suitable for regular wear.
Modern chinos often include a small percentage of stretch fibres such as elastane. This improves flexibility and comfort while maintaining the clean appearance associated with classic cotton twill.
